NBA Africa has launched its recreational basketball platform, NBA REC, in Nigeria, with the inaugural university tournament scheduled for August 7 and 8 at the University of Lagos.
The launch, delivered through a multi-year collaboration with Future Concerns Nigeria Limited, marks the introduction of the NBA REC programme to West Africa.
NBA REC is designed for players aged 18 and above, with a focus on improving university, community and adult basketball experiences.
The two-day tournament at UNILAG will feature eight men’s university teams from different parts of Nigeria, alongside fan entertainment and community activities. The participating teams and further details about the programme will be announced in the coming weeks.

Munch It, a snack brand under Kellogg Tolaram Nigeria Limited, has also joined the initiative as an official partner of the tournament.
Head of NBA Nigeria, Fola Folowosele, said the initiative would create more opportunities for young Nigerians to compete and connect through basketball.
“Nigeria is home to some of the most passionate basketball fans and talented young athletes in the world,” Folowosele said.
He added that NBA REC would combine basketball, lifestyle and community engagement while creating memorable experiences for participants and supporting the continued development of the sport in Nigeria.
Future Concerns Group Managing Director, Dr Anthony Oguike, described the collaboration as an investment in the growth of young Nigerians beyond the basketball court.
“We believe lasting impact begins with young people,” Oguike said.
According to him, university sports can help student-athletes develop the leadership, discipline and teamwork required to become future leaders and innovators.
Munch It Brand Manager, Enoma Aito, said the company’s involvement reflected its commitment to youth culture and its belief in basketball’s ability to unite young people.
The programme adds to the NBA’s growing presence in Nigeria, where the league opened a subsidiary office in Lagos in 2022.
Nigeria’s ties to the NBA date back to 1984, when Hakeem Olajuwon was selected as the first overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets. More than 50 players from Nigeria or with direct connections to the country have since featured in the league.
Three Nigerian clubs have also competed in the Basketball Africa League since its inaugural season in 2021, while initiatives such as NBA Crossover and NBA Meets Art have formed part of the league’s basketball and cultural activities in the country.
