Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford on Sunday, Boldsports report.
Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, securing Spain’s second men’s World Cup title and adding the global crown to the UEFA European Championship they won in 2024.
Spain dominated the match from the opening whistle. Luis de la Fuente’s side controlled possession, pressed aggressively, and created chance after chance against a stubborn Argentina defence. Spain attempted 20 shots, while Argentina managed only two efforts throughout the entire contest.
Despite that dominance, Spain could not find a way past Emiliano Martínez for more than 100 minutes. The Argentina goalkeeper produced a remarkable performance, making 11 saves to keep his team alive. He denied Nico Williams from close range, reacted sharply to a Rodri effort from distance, and made another crucial stop from a Ferran Torres attempt in the second half.
Martínez’s interventions frustrated Spain and briefly raised hopes that Argentina could survive until penalties.
Argentina’s task became even more difficult when Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card late in normal time. The Chelsea midfielder’s dismissal forced Lionel Scaloni’s side to play the entire extra-time period with 10 men.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 106th minute. Pedro Porro delivered a dangerous cross toward the back post, Nico Williams kept the ball in play with excellent awareness, and Torres reacted quickest inside the six-yard box to fire past Martínez.
The goal sparked emotional celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters as La Roja moved within minutes of world glory. Even after falling behind, Argentina struggled to create meaningful opportunities.
Lionel Messi made what was confirmed as his final World Cup appearance for Argentina. The 39-year-old was applauded by the entire stadium as he collected his runners-up medal after the match.
Spain’s victory completed a historic achievement. They became world champions for the second time after their 2010 triumph and also became the first nation since that golden era to hold both the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship simultaneously.
