Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman remains the only Nigerian player left in this season’s UEFA Champions League as the tournament heads into its decisive quarterfinal stage with just eight teams remaining.

Lookman’s side, Atlético Madrid, booked their place in the last eight after a thrilling 7-5 aggregate victory over Tottenham Hotspur. The Spanish outfit laid the foundation with a dominant 5-2 first-leg win before losing 3-2 in the return leg, progressing to set up a blockbuster clash against Barcelona.

The Nigerian international played a key role across both legs, contributing an assist and continuing his fine form in Europe. Since his move to Atlético, Lookman has registered one goal and two assists in four Champions League appearances, underlining his growing influence on the big stage.

In contrast, compatriot Victor Osimhen saw his European journey come to an end after Galatasaray were eliminated by Premier League champions Liverpool in the round of 16.

Despite securing a 1-0 first-leg advantage, the Turkish champions were thrashed 4-0 in the second leg to crash out 4-1 on aggregate. Osimhen was unable to finish the match as he was forced off at halftime due to an arm injury.

Nevertheless, the striker enjoyed an outstanding campaign, finishing with seven goals and one assist in 10 matches to emerge as one of the standout performers of the tournament.
