Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman will be hoping to extend his fine run of form in the UEFA Champions League when Atlético Madrid host Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their round of 16 clash on Tuesday.

The Nigerian International has quickly become an important figure for Diego Simeone’s side since arriving from Atalanta during the January transfer window.

Lookman played a key role in Atletico’s knockout phase play-off tie against Club Brugge, scoring in the first leg before providing an assist in the return leg as the Spanish side progressed with a 7-4 aggregate victory.

Since his move to Spain, the 28-year-old has been in impressive form, registering four goals and three assists in 10 appearances across all competitions.

Tuesday’s encounter will present Lookman with another opportunity to improve his record against Tottenham. The Nigerian International previously faced the North London side during spells at Everton, Fulham and Leicester City but is yet to taste victory against Spurs, having recorded two draws and two defeats in four meetings.

However, the in-form winger will be confident of changing that record as Atletico chase a place in the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition.

Simeone’s side head into the fixture in strong form, having won four of their last five matches, and will be looking to capitalise on Tottenham’s struggles in domestic competitions.

Now managed by Igor Tudor, Spurs are enduring a difficult run in the Premier League, where they are yet to record a win in 2026. The North London club have lost their last five league matches and sit just one point above 18th-placed West Ham United in the standings.

Despite their domestic woes, Tottenham’s form in the UEFA Champions League has been far more encouraging. Unlike Atletico, Spurs secured automatic qualification for the round of 16 after finishing fourth in the league phase, suffering just one defeat in eight matches.

With the first leg set to take place at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Tottenham will be hoping to secure a positive result to take back to London for the decisive second leg. For Atletico, however, victory at home will be vital as they aim to carry a strong advantage into the return fixture.
