Super Eagles forward Akor Adams has declared that Sevilla are ready to battle for city pride when they face fierce rivals Real Betis in Sunday’s highly anticipated derby clash.
The Nigerian international has grown into a key figure for Sevilla in recent weeks, underlining his importance with an assist in their last league outing against Getafe. Now, he is eager to carry that momentum into one of Spanish football’s most emotionally charged fixtures.
Betis have enjoyed recent bragging rights in the derby, winning the last two meetings between the sides. Earlier this season, Los Verdiblancos secured a 2-0 victory, while last season they claimed a 2-1 win at home. Adams is determined to help Sevilla turn the tide.
“I’ve played in two derbies, the first I didn’t play so much, the one I played this season, unfortunately we lost. For us and the people at the club, it’s more than a game, even though it comes down to three points at the end of the day,” Akor Adams told SportyTV in a recent interview.

“There is emotion, there is passion, there is a sense of pride for whoever wins. It’s like you own the city if you win the game. It comes with a good pressure knowing you could give your people so much joy with one victory,” he added.
With Betis currently fifth in La Liga and Sevilla sitting in 12th place on 29 points, just five above the relegation zone, the stakes are high beyond local pride. Adams insists his side will be fully committed as they seek a first derby win since 2024.
“We would fight, we would give our best and make sure we don’t lose.”
Beyond the derby, the 26-year-old emphasised the need for consistency if Sevilla are to climb the table.
“I think what we need is consistency. We can win a game, it’s not a problem, it’s to win the next one. In a league like this, if you look at the log, everything is very close. If you can consistently win three or four games, you would have a completely different outlook on the table.”
“We are working hard everyday. The coach is the best we can have right now, the boys are focused. For me, we just need the consistency to produce the same results.”

Akor Adams has been one of Sevilla’s standout performers this campaign, registering six goals and three assists in 13 La Liga starts. Yet, the striker believes there is still more to come from his game.
“As a striker, I know there’s the responsibility on me to not only score the goals, but also to affect the game in a positive way during different parts of the game.”
“What I think my team needs more from me is to own it. Even though I already know the responsibility, I need to own it, to give them the possibility of knowing that he’s gonna do something. It could be the first minute, it could be the 90th minute. It’s a bit of my game that I really want to master and be able to produce results regardless of how the game is.
