Rivers United’s exit from the 2025/26 CAF Champions League was confirmed on Saturday after they were thrashed 4–1 at home by Egypt’s Pyramids FC in their Matchday 5 Group A encounter.
The Port Harcourt side were hoping to secure their first home win of the group stage and began brightly, taking the lead through Stephen Manyo in the 33rd minute. Rivers United went into the halftime break with a deserved 1–0 advantage.
However, Pyramids produced a dominant second-half display, scoring four unanswered goals to maintain their unbeaten run in the competition and seal automatic qualification for the knockout stage.

Mostafa Fathi drew the visitors level in the 53rd minute before Mohamed Hamdy put Pyramids ahead from the penalty spot in the 77th minute. Odeh Al-Fakhouri extended the lead in the 88th minute as the Egyptian champions pulled clear, with Nasser Maher adding a fourth in stoppage time to complete the rout.
The defeat was Rivers United’s fourth in five group matches. They failed to record a home victory, losing at home to Pyramids, Power Dynamos and RS Berkane, and now sit bottom of Group A with just one point from five games.
Rivers United will travel to Morocco to face RS Berkane in their final group match, a must-win fixture for the hosts as they chase qualification to the next round.
