Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman will be hoping to build on a sensational start to his career in Spain when Atletico Madrid take on Real Betis in their La Liga clash at Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday, Bold Sports reports.

The Nigerian international made an instant impact after joining Atletico from Atalanta in one of the biggest deals of the January transfer window. Lookman scored within 37 minutes on his debut for Diego Simeone’s side and later provided an assist in the second half as Atletico thrashed Real Betis 5-0 to reach the semifinals of the Copa del Rey.

That remarkable performance marked the fourth time Lookman scored on his debut, having also found the net in his first appearances for Atalanta, RB Leipzig, and Everton. In addition, he celebrated his 100th senior career goal, a milestone achieved in 377 professional games.

With Atletico set to face Betis for a second time in just four days, Lookman is expected to feature in Simeone’s starting lineup once again. This time, he will be aiming to score on his La Liga debut.

Atletico Madrid have been formidable at home this season, winning 10 of their 11 league games at Riyadh Air Metropolitano and drawing only once. Their record is the second best in La Liga behind Barcelona, who have won all 11 of their home fixtures this campaign.

Diego Simeone’s side have also defeated Real Betis in their last three encounters and will be aiming to extend that streak. A victory on Sunday would put Atletico 10 points behind leaders Barcelona and 13 points clear of Betis, who currently sit fifth in the table.

Speaking on Lookman ahead of the game, Simeone said: “We will try to get to know each other little by little.  He must get used to the team and we must get used to his offensive characteristics, how he likes to attack, and we’ll see what best suits us.”
