Justin Madugu has missed out on the CAF Women’s Coach of the Year award despite guiding Nigeria’s Super Falcons to a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, Bold Sports reports.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Thursday announced TP Mazembe head coach Lamia Boumehdi as the winner of the award, with Madugu and Morocco women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda finishing behind her in the final shortlist.

CAF also unveiled winners in other women’s categories, with Moroccan forward Sanaa Mssoudy claiming the Women’s Interclub Player of the Year award, while AS FAR were named Women’s Club of the Year.

Madugu’s miss comes as a surprise to many, given the remarkable year he enjoyed with the Super Falcons. Under his guidance, Nigeria reclaimed continental supremacy, extending their dominance in African women’s football. His work also earned global recognition, as he was the only African coach nominated for the Women’s Coach of the Year at the Ballon d’Or, placing him among the elite tacticians in the women’s game.

Despite missing out on the CAF accolade, Madugu will have an opportunity to further underline his credentials when Nigeria set out to defend their crown at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Morocco from 17 March to 3 April.

Attention now shifts to Rabat, where the final draw for the competition will be held later on Thursday, with the Super Falcons set to discover their group-stage opponents as preparations for another title defence gather momentum.
