The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into incidents of unacceptable behaviour involving players and officials after Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Algeria in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinal clash on Saturday.

Eric Chelle’s side delivered a commanding performance in the encounter, with Victor Osimhen breaking the deadlock minutes into the second half before providing the assist for Akor Adams to seal the win, as Nigeria maintained their perfect run at the tournament.

Following the Super Eagles’ dominant victory at Stade de Marrakech, tensions flared, as the Desert Warriors voiced strong dissatisfaction with the officiating and clashed with some Nigerian players.

Similarly, the quarterfinal encounter between hosts Morocco and Cameroon was not without controversy, with the West African side left aggrieved by several refereeing decisions. The match finished in a 2-0 victory for the hosts, bringing Cameroon’s campaign to an end.

In a statement released on Monday, CAF reacted to the incidents that occurred in both quarterfinal games.

“CAF has collected recent match reports and video evidence indicating potentially unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials and has opened an investigation into match incidents during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 quarter-final fixtures between Cameroon and Morocco, as well as Algeria and Nigeria,” the statement read.

“CAF has referred the matters to the Disciplinary Board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons were to be found guilty of any wrongdoing.”

“CAF is also reviewing footage of an incident involving members of the media who allegedly misbehaved in the mixed zone area.”

“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers. Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events,” the statement concluded.

Nigeria will continue their journey in the tournament when they face hosts Morocco in a huge semi-final clash at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah in Rabat on Wednesday. Hours before then, Senegal will take on Egypt in the first semi-final at Grand Stade de Tanger.
