…Samuel Mbangula’s third goal in nine games

Substitutes Victor Boniface and Samuel Mbangula combined for a stunning 94th-minute winner as Werder Bremen came from behind to beat Wolfsburg 2-1 in a thrilling Bundesliga encounter at the Weserstadion on Friday night.

Bremen were aiming to extend their unbeaten streak to five matches, but after two consecutive starts without a goal, Boniface began the game on the bench.

It was the visitors who struck first, however, as Matias Svanberg opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Wolfsburg looked set to hold on for a narrow victory until Jens Stage drew Bremen level in the 83rd minute.

The hosts continued to press forward in search of a winner, and deep into stoppage time, Boniface attempted an overhead kick that looped high into the air before Mbangula reacted quickest to slot home, sparking wild celebrations among players, coaches, and fans alike.

Although Boniface is still searching for his first goal of the season, the assist was his second in eight appearances. The 24-year-old replaced Keke Topp in the 65th minute, while Mbangula came on for Justin Njinmah a minute later.

Reacting to the win, Boniface expressed his delight at the team’s fighting spirit and praised the fans for their unwavering support.

“I feel good. It was a difficult game. From 1–0 down, we turned things around and got the win. I think we did well,” Boniface said after the match.

“The whole team put in a great shift. The energy was top-notch, especially from the fans, and luckily for us, we got the win. For the bicycle kick, I was already worried the ball was going out, but that’s football for you.”

Up next for Bremen is a trip to face RB Leipzig after the international break on November 23.
