18-year-old winger Divine Onyemachi has earned a call-up to Nigeria’s squad for next month’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, according to football journalist Ben Jacobs.

Onyemachi, who recently completed a move to Serie A outfit Lecce after leaving West Bromwich Albion, will be looking to establish himself both at club level and on the international stage as the Flying Eagles prepare for the tournament’s 24th edition.

The youngster impressed during his time in England, netting 11 goals in 21 appearances for West Brom in the U18 Premier League last season, while also scoring twice in four FA Youth Cup outings. In the 2023-24 campaign, he was also on fine form with nine goals from 19 league games.

His inclusion in the squad adds firepower to a Nigerian side still chasing their first U-20 World Cup triumph. The Flying Eagles have twice gone close, finishing as runners-up in 1989 and 2005, when they lost to Portugal and Argentina respectively.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group F alongside Colombia, Saudi Arabia, and Norway — a group many believe the team is capable of navigating successfully.

The tournament will take place from September 27 to October 19 across four Chilean cities: Santiago, Rancagua, Valparaíso, and Talca. Nigeria is among four African nations set to participate in the tournament, joining continental champions South Africa, as well as Morocco and Egypt.
