Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo is reportedly on the radar of La Liga side Villarreal as he edges closer to a possible move away from Southampton.
With just one year left on his current contract, Aribo is drawing interest from several European clubs, and Villarreal have now joined the race to sign the Nigerian international, according to reports from Africafoot.
Earlier in the summer, Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig reportedly tabled a €10m offer for the 28-year-old midfielder. While negotiations are ongoing, Villarreal have now stepped up their pursuit and are said to be ready to offer €12m to lure Aribo to Spain.
Sources close to the deal suggest that Villarreal have already contacted Southampton to open talks over a potential transfer. A four-year contract worth €3.5m per season is reportedly being discussed.
Aribo, who stands at 1.83m, is viewed as a versatile option who can boost Villarreal’s attacking midfield ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Born in London, Aribo has been capped 34 times for Nigeria, scoring twice for the Super Eagles. He joined Southampton in 2022 from Rangers, where he impressed during the Scottish club’s run to the Europa League final.
Despite a challenging season with Southampton, Aribo remains a highly rated talent with a current market value of €6m, according to Transfermarkt.
A move to Villarreal could see Aribo return to regular top-flight football, with the Yellow Submarine looking to reinforce their squad after a mixed campaign in La Liga.
