Super Eagles defender Benjamin Fredrick was handed his first start for FCV Dender on Saturday, playing a key role as they held Standard Liege to a hard-fought 1-1 draw in their Belgian Pro League encounter, Bold Sports reports.

Fredrick, 20, had previously impressed off the bench in Dender’s season opener against Cercle Brugge, contributing to a clean sheet. His solid showing earned him a place in the starting XI against Liege, with head coach Vincent Euvrard deploying him in an unfamiliar right wing-back role.

Dennis Eckert’s 65th-minute strike looked set to give Standard Liege their second consecutive victory, but Roman Kvet had other ideas, scoring in the 85th minute to earn Dender a deserved point on the road.

Fredrick delivered an assured performance despite playing in an unfamiliar position, completing 93 percent of his passes and registering three clearances, three headed clearances, two recoveries, and two ground duels.

The draw preserved both teams’ unbeaten starts to the campaign, with Standard Liege leading the table on four points, while Dender occupy seventh place with two points from their opening two fixtures.

On loan from Premier League side Brentford, Fredrick will aim to build on his strong start in the Belgian Pro League when Dender take on St. Truiden in their next league outing on Friday, August 8.

Meanwhile, Standard Liege will look to extend their early-season momentum as they welcome Genk to Stade Maurice Dufrasne on Sunday, August 10.
