The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released the list of match officials for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with no Nigerian referee or assistant referee making the cut, Bold Sports reports.

The tournament, officially known as the TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2024, is scheduled to take place from 2 to 30 August 2025 across three East African nations: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

CAF named 70 match officials for the tournament, which is exclusively for players who play in their domestic leagues. The list includes 26 referees, 26 assistant referees, and 18 Video Match Officials (VMOs) drawn from over 30 member associations. But despite Nigeria’s strong presence in African football and the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) producing several top players, no Nigerian match official was selected.

CAF says the selection represents a deliberate mix of experienced and emerging referees and includes a growing number of women officials. Among the standout names are Bouchra Karboubi of Morocco and Shamirah Nabadda of Uganda, who lead the female referee representation. Diana Chikotesha (Zambia) and Atezambong Fomo Carine (Cameroon) also return as seasoned assistant referees.

Video Match Officials include top names like Mahmoud Ashour (Egypt), Samir Guezzaz (Morocco), and Ghorbal Mustapha (Algeria), as CAF continues to emphasize technology and technical proficiency through VAR.

All appointed officials are expected to arrive in the host countries before the opening match for a final round of training. CAF plans to conduct a pre-tournament workshop combining theory and practical sessions to align referees with its latest officiating protocols.

CHAN 2024, which is the 8th edition of the tournament, will kick off in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Kampala, and conclude with the final on 30 August 2025.

Nigeria are drawn in Group D of the tournament against reigning champions Senegal, Sudan and Congo.
