Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are set to take on Egypt’s Young Pharaohs in the third-place match of the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for Sunday, May 18, at the 30 June Stadium.

The Flying Eagles missed out on a spot in the final after a narrow 1-0 loss to South Africa’s Amajita in the semi-finals, despite having overcome defending champions Senegal in the quarter-finals.

In the same vein, Egypt’s hopes of securing a fifth U-20 Africa Cup of Nations title were dashed following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to fellow North African side Morocco, who booked their place in the final against South Africa.

Although all four teams have secured their spots at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, the battle for glory in the AFCON continues as South Africa will take on Morocco for the trophy, while Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will play for pride and a bronze medal against host nation Egypt, who will be eager to finish the tournament on a positive note.

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria have secured third place in the tournament on six occasions — in 1979, 1981, 1995, 2009, 2013, and most recently in 2023. In contrast, Egypt’s Young Pharaohs have claimed third place thrice — in 1993 and 2001 with wins over Ethiopia and in 2011 after defeating Mali.

Prior to the tournament, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles secured a 2-1 victory over Egypt in a friendly match, with goals from Kparobo Ariehi and Precious Benjamin. They’ll now be aiming to repeat that performance as they look to claim a seventh third-place finish.
