NFF throw weight behind Calvin Bassey after racist abuse incident

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) have publicly declared its support for Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey, who recently faced racist and homophobic abuse after Fulham’s FA Cup win over Manchester United.

Calvin Bassey played a crucial role in Fulham’s victory, scoring a pivotal goal to give the London club the lead before they won on penalties to advance to the quarterfinals. However, his remarkable performance was marred by racist remarks from some supporters on his social media account.

Premier League side Fulham, have since condemned the incident, releasing a club statement against the terrible behavior from the supporters. Now, the NFF have also weighed in, expressing its solidarity with Calvin Bassey.

In a statement, the NFF emphasized its commitment to combating discrimination and racial abuse: “The NFF stands firmly against all forms of discrimination, including racial abuse, and fully supports Calvin Bassey in the face of these unacceptable actions,” the statement read.

The NFF reiterated its dedication to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all players: “We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all players, both on and off the field. Calvin has our unwavering support, and together, we will continue to fight against racism in football and society.”

Despite the unfortunate incident, Calvin Bassey will be extremely delighted after an incredible performance against the defending champions. The win guaranteed their passage to the quarterfinals where they will face Crystal Palace with the quest of securing victory in order to move one step closer to winning their first-ever major trophy.
