Jong Genk have confirmed the signing of highly rated 18-year-old striker Jonathan Coenen, who is of Nigerian descent, from RC Hades Hasselt. The youngster joins the club on a four-year contract. The move was officially announced on Monday via Genk’s website.

Coenen will link up with his new teammates in the summer, ahead of the 2025/26 season, and will be aiming to quickly establish himself as a key figure in the squad.

The talented forward had attracted interest from several Belgian top-flight clubs, but it was the Blauw-Wit who ultimately won the race for his signature.

Reacting to his move, Coenen, who joined RC Hades at the age of 11 and spent seven seasons progressing through their youth and senior ranks, expressed his excitement about the next chapter of his career.

“It is a dream come true,” said the young striker, who is currently studying Physiotherapy at the University of Diepenbeek.
“I will do my utmost to balance my studies and football. With this step, I have already proven that hard work can take you far.”

Jong Genk’s technical coordinator, Stijn Haeldermans, also spoke highly of Coenen’s potential, praising both his physical attributes and professional mentality.

“Jonathan is 1.93 meters tall. His height and strength in duels make him an ideal target man. He is capable of holding up the ball and allowing the team to play off him. He combines that physical presence with speed and agility, which gives him a unique profile,” Haeldermans said.

“He’s the kind of player who can really trouble defenses. More importantly, he has the right mindset to succeed as a professional.”

Jong Genk is the junior team of KRC Genk, who play in the Belgian Pro League.
