Ikorodu City hands Rivers United first season loss in Lagos

Ikorodu City FC earned their third win of the season with a memorable 2- 0 victory over title contenders and high-flying Rivers United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday in a Nigeria Premier Football League encounter.

Rivers United who had been unbeaten in their first nine games of the season were the favourite for the win on paper but were stunned when Ikorodu took the lead in the 48th minute through Cole Ayomide while Rivio Ayemwenre ensur3d there was jo co.e back for the visitors after grabbing Ikorodu’s second in the 53rd minute.

The win is the third of the campaign for Ikorodu City, while it is the first loss of the season for Rivers United and George Finidi’s boys. The result also saw Rivers United lose their top spot in the NPFL to Remo Stars who recorded a 1-0 win over visiting Lobi Stars in Ikenne.

Despite still being in the relegation zone, Ikorodu City will be banking in the performance against Rivers to propel them to better results as they hope to maintain their NPFL status at the end of the season.

In other results, Bendel Insurance and Heartland record the only away wins of the season. Insurerance earned 2-1 win over Sunshine Stars in Ijebu, while Emmanuel Amuneke’s Heartland recorded a 2-0 away victoover Abia Warriors.

Ikorodu City will be away to Katsina United in their next league fixture.
