Plymouth Argyle could be without Nigeria striker Owen Oseni until the end of November after an ankle injury setback, Bold Sports reports.

The 23-year-old suffered the injury during Plymouth’s 5-1 win over Crystal Palace Under-21s in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy on 22 September. He left the match after 33 minutes and now faces an extended spell on the sidelines.

Oseni had only recently returned from a thigh injury. He made two substitute appearances in League One in early September as he worked his way back to full fitness. The latest setback could now keep him out for several weeks.

Plymouth take extra care with Oseni

Plymouth head coach Tom Cleverley confirmed that the club will not rush the striker back.

“Because it’s an ankle he’s injured in the past the specialist has advised we take a little bit more time to make sure that ankle heals and is as stable as it can be,” Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon.

The previous ankle problem has influenced Plymouth’s approach to his recovery. The club wants the injury to heal properly before Oseni returns to competitive action.

His latest setback comes during a difficult start to the campaign. Oseni missed a large part of pre-season because of his thigh injury. He then returned to the squad before suffering another setback against Palace Under-21s.

Oseni had impressed last season

The potential absence is significant for Plymouth after Oseni’s contribution last season.

The striker scored 10 goals in 33 appearances after joining the Pilgrims from Scottish club St Mirren. He also earned his first Nigeria cap in May.

Cleverley admitted that the latest injury represents another frustrating moment for the forward.

“I’m disappointed for him because his season’s not got going,” he said.

“He missed a large part of the pre-season and then he’s trying to chase a little bit of fitness.

“Then in a sort of nothing action of the game, chasing a ball into the channel that the defender falls on him and his ankle sprains.

“It was an important game that he played in against Palace Under-21s, and unfortunately he didn’t come out the other end of it fit.”

Plymouth will now manage Oseni’s recovery carefully. If the current timeline holds, the Nigeria international could remain unavailable until the end of November.
