Newly-promoted Premier League side Coventry City have completed the permanent signing of Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest.

The Sky Blues confirmed the move in a statement released on their official website on Monday, with reports putting the transfer fee at around £9 million.

It brings an end to Awoniyi’s four-year spell at the City Ground. The 29-year-old scored 23 goals and provided five assists in 103 appearances across all competitions for Forest.

Awoniyi will now link up with fellow Nigerian international Frank Onyeka, who also joined Coventry permanently this summer after impressing on loan during the second half of last season.

Taiwo Awoniyi began his professional career with Liverpool before gaining valuable experience during loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron and KAA Gent.

He later moved to the Bundesliga, spending the 2019-20 season on loan at Mainz 05 before joining Union Berlin temporarily for the following campaign. His impressive performances convinced Union Berlin to sign him permanently in 2021.

Awoniyi enjoyed the most prolific season of his career with the German club, scoring 20 goals, including four in the UEFA Conference League, before earning a move to Nottingham Forest in 2022 as the newly-promoted Premier League side broke their transfer record to secure his services.

He made an immediate impact at Forest, scoring 11 goals in his first campaign to help the club avoid relegation in their first season back in the Premier League, while also reaching the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The Nigerian was also part of the Forest side that finished seventh in the 2024-25 Premier League season to secure European football and remained an important member of the squad.

Speaking after completing his move to Coventry, Awoniyi expressed his excitement about joining the club and working with his new teammates.

“I’m very happy to complete my move to Coventry City,” Awoniyi said.

“I am very excited about this season, and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m really looking forward to working with my new teammates. I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship, they were incredible, and now I am just excited to join them and get started for the new season.”
