South Africa secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Burkina Faso 1-0 in their decisive Group B clash on Tuesday, Bold Sports reports.
A first-half goal from Thembi Kgatlana separated the two sides, sending Banyana Banyana into the knockout stage while ending Burkina Faso’s hopes of progressing.
Kgatlana once again proved decisive for South Africa after leading the team’s attack throughout the group stage. The experienced forward delivered when her side needed it most, converting the game’s only goal to underline her influence as Banyana Banyana chased qualification for the last eight.
Burkina Faso looked the more dangerous side in the opening exchanges and almost grabbed an early lead. Alimata Belem broke clear on goal but hesitated at the crucial moment, allowing the South African goalkeeper to recover and claim the ball before she could get a shot away.
The breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute. Fikile Magama produced an intelligent cross into the penalty area, where Kgatlana timed her run perfectly before guiding a close-range finish into the net to give South Africa a priceless advantage.
Before the interval, Kgatlana almost doubled her tally. A cleverly worked set-piece involving Refilwe Jane created another opening, but the forward’s effort sailed narrowly over the crossbar.
Burkina Faso returned for the second half determined to rescue the match and keep their tournament alive. They committed more players forward and searched for an equaliser, but South Africa remained organised defensively and limited their opponents to few clear-cut opportunities.
Banyana Banyana managed the closing stages with discipline and confidence, frustrating every Burkina Faso attack before seeing out the victory.
The result confirms South Africa’s place in the WAFCON quarter-finals as they continue their bid for continental success. Burkina Faso, meanwhile, exit the competition after battling until the final whistle but failing to find the goal that would have kept their campaign alive.
South Africa will now face hosts Morocco in the WAFCON quarter-finals, with more than a semi-final place on the line. Victory would also secure Banyana Banyana a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, as all four quarter-final winners qualify automatically for the global tournament.
