Samuel Ogazi etched his name into the history books after storming to victory in the men’s 400m final to secure Team Nigeria’s 10th gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Saturday.
The 20-year-old produced a sensational performance, crossing the finish line in 44.25 seconds to become the first Nigerian man to win Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s 400m event.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards claimed the silver medal in 44.82 seconds, while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene completed the podium with bronze after clocking 45.21 seconds.
Nigeria’s second finalist, Edidiong Okon Udo, finished eighth in 45.81 seconds.

Speaking after his historic triumph, an ecstatic Ogazi said fulfilling his ambition of bringing glory to Nigeria made the victory even more special.
“It feels good. I’ve always told myself, Samuel, you have to put Nigeria on the map,” he said.
Ogazi also paid tribute to Jereem Richards, revealing that the Trinidad and Tobago athlete has played a significant role in his development.
“I’ve been looking up to Jereem since 2022 and he has been a great mentor, a great coach, a great role model. He has always been talking to me, he has played a big part in my success,” Ogazi added.
Buoyed by his landmark achievement, the Nigerian sprinter believes he is now ready to compete with the very best on the world stage.
“I feel like I’m ready for anything right now. I’m ready for anybody. I could win at any level,” he said.
Ogazi also praised compatriot Edidiong Okon Udo for reaching the final, despite his eighth-place finish.
“That’s a plus. He reached the finals and did his thing. I’m proud of him,” he said.
Ogazi’s victory took Team Nigeria’s haul at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games to 19 medals, comprising 10 gold, six silver and three bronze, further underlining the country’s impressive campaign.
