Burkina Faso claimed a historic first-ever victory at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after defeating ten-woman Tanzania 2-1 in a thrilling Group B encounter at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca on Friday.
Goals from Naomi Kabré and Balkissa Sawadogo earned the Lady Stallions their first three points of the 2026 WAFCON, as they bounced back in style after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in their opening match.
Tanzania entered the contest full of confidence following their impressive 2-1 victory over South Africa, but they were ultimately undone against Issa Balbone’s side after playing for over 35 second half minutes with 10 players.
The opening exchanges were closely contested, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. However, Burkina Faso broke the deadlock two minutes before halftime when Kabré capitalised on a poor defensive clearance, winning possession on the edge of the penalty area before producing a superb finish to give her side a deserved 1-0 lead.

Tanzania’s hopes suffered a major blow in the 55th minute when Hasnath Ubamba was shown a straight red card, reducing the Twiga Stars to 10 players for the remainder of the match.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Tanzania fought back and restored parity in the 62nd minute. A dangerous free-kick was pushed onto the crossbar by the Burkina Faso goalkeeper, with Aisha Mnunka reacting quickest to turn home the rebound and make it 1-1.
The equaliser set up a tense finale, but Burkina Faso found the decisive breakthrough 10 minutes from time. Sawadogo pounced from close range after the ball fell kindly inside the box, firing home what proved to be the winning goal.
The victory lifts Burkina Faso to second place in Group B on three points, while Tanzania slip to third. Ivory Coast remain top of the standings with four points after playing out a 2-2 draw against South Africa, who are bottom with one point.
Burkina Faso will take on South Africa in their final group match on Tuesday, August 4, while Tanzania face group leaders Ivory Coast on the same day.
With all four teams still in contention for a place in the knockout stage, Group B is set for a dramatic conclusion, with qualification and elimination to be decided on the final matchday.
