Amad Diallo scored a late winning goal to help Ivory Coast secure a huge 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener at Philadelphia Stadium on Monday.
The Manchester United winger came on in the 56th minute and found the net 34 minutes later, leading The Elephants to a winning start in their World Cup campaign.
Ecuador dominated proceedings for most of the first half, but failed to capitalise as they were unable to break the deadlock. In the 23rd minute, John Yeboah came close to opening the scoring, but his effort hit the crossbar.

Seven minutes later, the crossbar denied Ecuador once again. This time, Pedro Vite thread a lovely pass through for Alan Minda, who did everything right except the finish, as his effort crashed off the bar yet again.
At the other end, RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande posed most of the threat coming from Ivory Coast. The 19-year-old was very lively on the right wing, beating Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie on multiple occasions and creating a couple of dangerous chances. Despite his efforts, the scores remained level by halftime.
Seven minutes into the second half, the crossbar denied another goal-bound opportunity, this time for Ivory Coast. Diomande provided the chance once again, delivering a superb low cross into the box which was met by Elye Wahi at the near post. However, the striker’s effort crashed off the bar.

Diomande moved to the left wing after the introduction of Amad Diallo in the 56th minute, as the Manchester United winger occupied the right wing position.
Two minutes later, Diomande showed his quality as he dribbled his way into the box, but he was unable to apply a quality finish, as his effort went well over the frame of the goal.
Just when it seemed like the game was heading for a goalless draw, Ivory Coast finally found a late winner in the 90th minute. Defender Wilfried Singo created the opportunity, surging forward on the right before delivering a brilliant pass to Amad who placed the ball into the bottom-left corner, securing all three points for The Elephants.

It marked a remarkable result for Ivory Coast who have the youngest squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with an average age of approximately 25.8. They result takes them up to second in Group E, only behind Germany who thrashed Curaçao 7-1 in their opening game.
Ivory Coast’s next game comes up against the European heavyweights on Saturday, June 20. Meanwhile, Ecuador will be desperate for victory when they face Curaçao on Sunday, June 21.
