Victor Osimhen returned to action on Wednesday, but could not inspire Galatasaray to victory as they suffered a 2-0 loss to Gençlerbirligi in the Turkish Cup quarterfinal.

The Super Eagles striker had been sidelined for over a month due to an arm injury sustained in Galatasaray’s Champions League round of 16 clash with Liverpool.

However, he has since resumed full training and was named on the bench for the cup encounter. Surprisingly, Galatasaray were eliminated from the competition, ending their hopes of winning the trophy for the second straight season.

After a goalless first half, Gençlerbirligi stunned the hosts in the 51st minute, taking the lead through Firatcan Üzüm’s goal. Few minutes after going behind, the home side began to make changes in a desperate bid to turn the game around.

Victor Osimhen was introduced in the 78th minute, coming on for Renato Nhaga. Shortly after, Adama Traoré extended the visitors’ advantage, making it 2-0.

Galatasaray continued to push for a late goal to try and spark a comeback. But Gençlerbirligi remained disciplined in defense, holding onto their two-goal lead to seal their spot in the semifinal.

It means that Galatasaray are now left with only the Super Lig to fight for, after being eliminated from the Champions League, and now the Turkish Cup in the space of just over a month.

The return of Victor Osimhen will serve as a huge boost to the side, as they seek to lift the Super Lig title for the fourth straight season. They currently sit top of the table with 71 points, four points above second-placed Fenerbahçe.

Interestingly, both sides will face off in Galatasaray’s next game on Sunday, April 26 in an enthralling clash that could have huge implications on the title race.
