Bendel Insurance head coach, Kennedy Boboye, has been handed a 17-match suspension and fined ₦2 million by the Nigeria Premier Football League following misconduct after the club’s league fixture against Plateau United, Boldsports report.
The disciplinary action comes in the aftermath of the Matchday 32 encounter, popularly referred to as #BENPLA, which ended in a 2-2 draw at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. The league body found the coach guilty of improper conduct towards a match official, an act deemed to be in violation of the league’s regulations on discipline and fair play.
In addition to the sanctions imposed on the coach, Bendel Insurance Football Club have been fined ₦5 million for breaches relating to the incident. The NPFL also ruled that the club must play their next three home matches behind closed doors, citing crowd-related issues and the overall handling of the situation as contributing factors.
The decision reflects the NPFL’s firm stance on maintaining order, professionalism, and respect for match officials, particularly in high-pressure situations. The league emphasized that actions capable of bringing the game into disrepute will not be tolerated, regardless of the individuals or clubs involved.
The absence of Kennedy Boboye from the touchline for an extended period represents a significant setback for Bendel Insurance, especially at a critical stage of the season. His suspension is expected to place additional responsibility on the technical crew as the team navigates upcoming fixtures without its head coach’s direct influence during matches.
Meanwhile, the order to play behind closed doors is likely to impact the team’s home advantage, as they will be without the support of their fans at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. This could influence both team morale and performance in the affected fixtures.
Despite the sanctions, Bendel Insurance retain the right to appeal the ruling in accordance with NPFL regulations. Any appeal would be subject to review by the appropriate disciplinary bodies.
The NPFL’s actions underline its continued efforts to enforce discipline across the league and ensure that standards of conduct are upheld by clubs, officials, and supporters alike.
