Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo has named Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as one of the toughest defenders he has faced in his career.
The Nigeria international is widely regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and among the strongest players in the competition. In addition to his physical strength and imposing frame, Bassey possesses remarkable pace, making him extremely difficult to beat both in ground duels and aerial battles.
Speaking on Zack Nani, Mbeumo revealed that the Nigerian defender stood out during their encounters, highlighting his strength, speed, and football intelligence.

“Calvin Bassey, damn. I think he really stood out in games. Even the two previous games against them, he was solid. Yeah, Calvin Bassey is a beast – the guy is a beast. He’s too strong, it’s crazy, and on top of that he’s fast too. It’s not cool to play against him,” Mbeumo said.
Bassey has gone up against some of the Premier League’s most formidable strikers and has earned widespread respect for his defensive qualities. Manchester City forward Erling Haaland has also previously acknowledged the Nigerian’s strength and physical presence.
The former Leicester City, Rangers, and Ajax defender was named Fulham’s Player of the Season for the 2024/25 campaign, following a series of outstanding performances for the London club.
