Stoppage-time drama as Shooting Stars edge Rivers United 2–1

Shooting Stars SC moved up to sixth place on the Nigeria Premier Football League table following a dramatic 2–1 victory over league leaders Rivers United in a pulsating encounter at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

Rivers United arrived in Ibadan on the back of two consecutive wins and were hoping to extend their lead at the top of the table to five points.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 33rd minute through Sodiq Ibrahim, sending the home fans into early celebrations. Rivers United responded after the break as Wasiu Falolu restored parity in the 68th minute to set up a tense finish.

However, the hosts had the final say when Qamar Adegoke struck in stoppage time, scoring the decisive goal in the 91st minute to seal all three points and send the fans at the Lekan Salami Stadium into rapturous celebration.

The victory lifts Shooting Stars to sixth place on the table, bringing them closer to the title contenders and boosting their hopes of finishing in the top three to secure one of the coveted continental club competition spots.

They now sit eight points behind leaders Rivers United, six points behind second-placed Enugu Rangers, and three points behind third-placed Nasarawa United. Shooting Stars are also two points adrift of fourth-placed Abia Warriors and just one point behind fifth-placed Ikorodu City.

For Rivers United, it was a disappointing result as they missed the opportunity to go five points clear of Enugu Rangers at the top with a game in hand. The defeat further opens up the title race with 11 to 12 matches remaining before the end of the season.
