Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has shared his excitement after completing a huge move to Spanish giants Atlético Madrid, describing the transfer as a fresh challenge he is eager to embrace, Bold Sports reports.
After a hot race for his signature, the 28-year-old’s switch from Atalanta was confirmed on Monday, with Lookman signing a long-term contract that will keep him at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano until June 30, 2030.
Speaking in his first interview with Atlético’s media team, Lookman admitted the move carries huge significance, as he begins a new chapter with one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
“It’s very special to be here. I’m very happy to be here. It’s a massive club so it’s a blessing to be here,” Lookman said.
The transfer marks another major step in the winger’s already impressive European journey. Lookman has previously played in several top leagues, featuring for Fulham, Everton and Leicester City in the Premier League, RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, and Atalanta in the Serie A.
Now, with La Liga next on his list, Lookman believes the move presents a new environment and new demands, but one he is fully prepared for.
“I’ve played in three other top leagues so coming to another top league, top country also, new language, new challenges ahead for me but I’m very excited about it and I’m looking forward to it.”
Beyond settling in, the Nigerian international also made his ambitions clear, stating he wants to develop further while helping Atlético compete for trophies.

“I like to learn, I like to grow and to be better. I’m joining a group of amazing footballers, so I want to help as much as I can and win.”
Lookman also spoke warmly about Atlético’s supporters, acknowledging the reputation of the club’s fanbase and the passion they bring to every matchday.
“Very very passionate. Very much behind the team. They live and breath football. I’m very aware of the fans and the supporters here. The passion they bring to the club and the players is special.”
With the move now completed, Lookman has already begun training with his new teammates and could make his debut as early as Thursday when Atlético Madrid take on Real Betis in the Copa del Rey quarterfinal.
