…Mahrez says Algeria has quality players that can hurt Super Eagles

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has insisted that the Fennecs are not intimidated by the Super Eagles’ attacking firepower as they target victory and a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Algeria, who have impressed throughout the tournament by winning all four of their matches so far, will face Nigeria in a mouth-watering quarter-final clash at the Stade de Marrakech on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 5 pm Nigerian time.

Nigeria have also been flawless in the competition, winning all four of their games, and the Fennecs are expected to provide the Super Eagles with their toughest test yet.

To book their place in the quarter-finals, Algeria needed extra time to edge past the Democratic Republic of Congo 1–0, while Nigeria cruised to a comfortable 4–0 victory over Mozambique.

The Super Eagles have been the most lethal side at the tournament, scoring 12 goals and boasting some of Africa’s most dangerous forwards in Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Akor Adams. However, Mahrez maintained that while Algeria respects Nigeria’s attacking threat, they are not afraid.

“They have scored a lot of goals in this competition and have a very good attack, I can’t deny that,” Mahrez said at the pre-match press conference in Marrakech. “But tomorrow is another day. I’m not afraid at all because we also have our quality and our own threats.”

For the Super Eagles, the encounter also carries added motivation as they seek to avenge their semi-final defeat to Algeria at the 2019 AFCON, a tournament the Fennecs went on to win.
