Tragedy has struck the Nigerian football scene as newly appointed Shooting Stars Sports Club assistant coach, Akin Olowokere, passed away on Monday at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode, Bold Sports reports.
According to eyewitness accounts, Olowokere collapsed during the team’s morning training session and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
The former footballer and ex-Chairman of the Akoko South East Football Association (FA) in Ondo State had only been unveiled as one of Shooting Stars’ assistant coaches on Saturday in a widely publicised video shared on the club’s social media platforms.
The club, in a statement, mourned the coach, extolling his qualities as a committed and compassionate person who, in his short stint with the club,

“It is with deep shock and profound sadness that Shooting Stars Sports Club announces the passing of our beloved Coach Akin Olowokere, who tragically slumped and passed away on the pitch this morning, August 11, 2025,” the club statement reads.
“Coach Olowokere was not only a dedicated and passionate football tactician, but also a mentor, friend, and father figure to the players and many others. He exhibited compassion within his short stint with the club and the wider football community. His commitment to the growth and success of our team was unwavering, as we hope his legacy continues to inspire generations to come.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, players, and the entire Nigerian football family during this difficult time. We stand with them in prayers and solidarity, and we pray for the strength to bear this painful loss.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace. left his footprints. “
The Oluyole Warriors are currently in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, preparing for their second match of the ongoing ValueJet Cup 2025, following a 1-0 loss to Ikorodu City in their preseason opener.
The club was billed to play Abia Warriors in their second game of the ValueJet Cup by 4 pm. Shooting Stars are scheduled to kick off their 2025/26 campaign against Bayelsa United on Friday, August 22, in Ibadan.
