Ipswich Town have officially completed the signing of Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom on a season-long loan from Dutch giants Ajax, ending one of the biggest transfer sagas this summer, Bold Sports reports.
The 29-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at French side Lille, featuring in the UEFA Champions League, and boasts extensive Championship experience with Middlesbrough, Brighton, Hull City, and Nottingham Forest.
He becomes Ipswich Town’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window and could make his debut away to Bromley in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.
“I was really excited when I heard of the interest and I’m delighted to have joined a club with such big ambitions,” Akpom told TownTV. “I watch a lot of football and have always thought Ipswich would suit my style, so this move makes perfect sense.
“I have had lots of good experiences over the last few years, at Ajax and playing in the Champions League with Lille, and I feel like all of these have improved me as a player and helped me be the person I am now.
“I’m here to do as much as I can do to help the team, in the changing room and on the pitch, and I’ll bring a winning mentality here,” he added.
Akpom began his career in Arsenal’s youth system before embarking on loan spells with Brentford, Coventry City, Hull City, and Brighton. In 2018, he moved abroad to Belgian side St.Truiden for the second half of the season before joining Greek outfit PAOK Thessaloniki, where he scored 14 goals over two seasons.

He returned to England in September 2020 with Middlesbrough, and after a loan back to PAOK in 2021/22, he enjoyed a prolific 2022/23 campaign, scoring 28 goals to win the Championship Golden Boot. His form earned him a transfer to Ajax in the summer of 2023, where he netted 21 goals before heading to Lille on loan for the second half of last season.
Akpom’s arrival adds further attacking depth to an Ipswich side looking to challenge for promotion in the upcoming Championship season.
