Nigerian forward Philip Otele will be hoping to maintain his remarkable form for Basel as they aim to secure their 21st Swiss Super League title with a victory over Lugano at the Stadio di Cornaredo on Saturday.
Basel have been outstanding this season, securing 19 victories and suffering eight defeats as they fight to claim the league title for the first time since the 2016-17 season. They are currently nine points ahead of second-placed Servette, and with only four matches remaining, a win over Lugano and a slip-up by Servette would confirm their status as champions.
A crucial element in Basel’s title push has been their attacking strength, having scored 77 goals this season — 24 more than Servette and 16 more than Luzern, who have the second-highest goal tally in the league.
The arrival of Philip Otele in January undoubtedly played a key role in the team’s form in front of goal with the Nigerian forward netting eight goals and providing three assists in 15 league appearances since joining the Swiss club on loan from Saudi Pro League side Al-Wahda.

The 25-year-old will return to his parent club when his loan spell ends, but Basel are likely to activate their option to sign him permanently as they aim to keep him for next season.
In the meantime, Basel will be hoping to replicate their 2-0 win over Lugano from last month’s clash at St. Jakob-Park. However, they’ll need to be cautious of their away record, having failed to secure a victory in their last two trips to the Stadio di Cornaredo.
