Nigerian forward Philip Otele netted twice for the second game in a row, playing a key role in Basel’s dominant 5-0 victory over Yverdon in their Super League clash at St. Jakob-Park on Monday.

Philip Otele had found the net twice in his previous Super League outing against Zurich, where Basel cruised to a 4-0 victory. Consequently, the 26-year-old was once again named in the starting lineup, joining Xherdan Shaqiri, Benie Traore, and Albian Ajeti in attack.

Just as he did in the 4-0 win, Philip Otele opened the scoring against Yverdon, finding the net in the 16th minute. Shortly after, Shaqiri and Traore took over, teaming up to score three goals within 10 minutes, giving Basel a commanding 4-0 advantage by halftime.

In the second half, Philip Otele struck again, netting his second of the game and eighth of the season to seal Basel’s emphatic 5-0 victory. The Nigerian forward was substituted in the 58th minute along with Leon Avdullahu and Albian Ajeti, making way for Anton Kade, Leo Leroy and Kevin Carlos.

The dominant victory marked Basel’s fifth consecutive win, keeping them seven points clear of second-placed Servette, who edged past Luzern with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph. Meanwhile, Yverdon find themselves in relegation danger, sitting 11th on the table with 33 points from 33 matches.

Philip Otele and Basel will be aiming to maintain their strong form when they take on Lausanne in the Swiss Cup semi-final coming up in six days time.
