Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe netted the opener as Benfica secured a dominant 3-0 win over Valadares Gaia on Saturday to clinch their fifth consecutive Portuguese Liga BPI title.

With just three games left to conclude the season, Benfica came into the game against Valadares Gaia needing victory to secure the title as they were eight points clear of second-placed Sporting CP who also faced Clube de Albergaria at the same time.

With the stakes high, Christy Ucheibe proved to be decisive for Benfica, rising high to head a well-delivered corner into the back of the net in the 29th minute, giving the visitors a much-needed lead. The league leaders then doubled their advantage few minutes before halftime, with Cristina Martin-Prieto Gutierrez finishing off a brilliant team move.

Benfica sealed their win deep into the second half as Beatriz Cameirao received a pass on the edge of the box before firing a one-time shot into the back of the net, sparking celebrations in the away end and ultimately securing Benfica’s fifth consecutive Liga BPI title in style.

Benfica’s triumph means that they have automatically qualified for the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League group phase where they will be aiming to lift the trophy for the first time ever.

Asides her goal, Christy Ucheibe delivered an outstanding performance, playing a pivotal role in Benfica’s triumph and further solidifying her reputation as a key player for the club. With another Liga BPI title, she adds to her growing list of achievements, expanding her impressive collection with the Portuguese giants.

Christy Ucheibe will hope to replicate her club form when she returns to represent the Super Falcons at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations which will take place from July 5 to July 26, 2025, in Morocco. Nigeria, drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania will be aiming to dominate the continent once again after finishing fourth place in 2022.
