Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare has returned from the International break with a bang, scoring his 20th goal of the season to secure a dominant 4-0 win for Genk over Gent in their playoff clash on Sunday.

Arokodare, who made his long-awaited Super Eagles debut in their 2-0 win over Rwanda, returned straight to Genk’s starting lineup as they sought to begin the Champions’ playoffs on a winning note after finishing top of the table in the regular season.

Few minutes into the game, Arokodare drew a foul inside the box, winning a penalty which Jarne Steuckers failed to convert. Some minutes after that, the Nigerian striker had the chance to score another awarded spot kick, but he also missed, leading to frustrations among the home crowd.

In the 38th minute, Genk finally got their well-deserved goal as highly-rated youngster Konstantinos Karetsas scored to give the home side a lead going into half time. Five minutes into the second half, Arokodare atoned for his penalty miss, scoring his 18th league goal and his 20th in all competitions to extend Genk’s advantage.

The home side sealed their win with two quick-fire goals from super substitute Hyun-Guy Oh, who came on for Arokodare in the 70th minute before netting in the 88th and 91st minutes, wrapping up the 4-0 win in dominant style.

With the win, Genk remain in firm control at the top with 37 points, leading second-placed Club Brugge by four points as they continue to target lifting the Belgian Pro League for the first time since 2019.

Genk’s next challenge is an away clash against Anderlecht on Sunday, April 6 while Gent will be hoping to bounce back from the disappointing defeat when they host Union St.Gilloise on Saturday.
