Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has sent a message to Nigerian supporters, reassuring them that his first international goal is imminent, after he scored for Bayer Leverkusen to secure a crucial 3-1 win in their Bundesliga clash against Bochum on Friday.

The Bayer Leverkusen striker broke his five-game goalscoring drought for the champions in their encounter against Bochum, scoring in the 60th minute to regain the lead after Felix Passlack had cancelled out Aleix Garcia’s opening goal.

The strike against Bochum was Boniface’s 11th goal of the season and his 8th in the Bundesliga, making him the third highest goal scorer for Bayer Leverkusen in the league despite his injury struggles.

However, Boniface has struggled to translate his impressive club form to the national team. Since making his debut in a 6-0 win over São Tomé and Príncipe, the 24-year-old has only scored in a friendly game against Saudi Arabia, failing to net in a competitive match for the Super Eagles.

After his goal against Bochum, Boniface took to his Instagram story to reassure Nigerian supporters, requesting for patience to break his international goal drought: “Nigerians please be patient with me, the goal will come,” he posted.

Nonetheless, Boniface’s immediate priority will be on helping Bayer Leverkusen retain their Bundesliga title. With their win over Bochum, the champions are now three points behind Bayern and will need to maintain a winning streak if they are to achieve back-to-back league triumphs.
