Akwa United’s hopes of surviving the drop in the Nigeria Premier Football League received a huge boost recording a 2-0 win over Niger Tornadoes at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyoon Thursday.
The Promise Keepers went into the game full of confidence on the back of their 2-0 victory over Kwara United in Ilorin. The hosts took the lead in the 44th minute through an Ifeanyi Okoye’s own goal before Mare Abson secured the game with Akwa’s second in the 69yh minute.
Tornadoes tried to mount a comeback in the dying minutes of the game, but their efforts were thwarted by the resolute Akwa United defence.
The win takes Akwa United off the relegation zone for the first time this season as they currently sit 18th on the table, one point off the relegation zone.
