Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Rivers United have failed to close the gap on league leaders Remo Stars, losing to Bayelsa United 1-0 at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa on Wednesday.
Rivers United had a golden opportunity to cut Remo Stars lead at the top to just two points with a win, but their ambitions were put to the test by an in-form Bayelsa United, who were riding a four-game unbeaten streak.
With the energetic home crowd behind them, Bayelsa United burst out of the gates, taking the lead in the 19th minute through Kehinde Malik’s strike, which they held until the halftime break.
Finidi George’s side stepped up their pursuit of an equalizer in the second half, with Mathias Samuel narrowly missing the chance to level the scoreline in the 57th minute as his free kick rattled the woodwork, further frustrating the visitors.
Rivers United’s attempts to salvage a result through multiple substitutions ultimately fell short, as a determined Bayelsa United side held firm to secure victory and extend their unbeaten streak to five games.
The crucial win propels Bayelsa United up to 11th on the NPFL table with 41 points in 31 games while Rivers United remain second with 52 points, five points behind Remo Stars who have two games in hand.
