Nigerian striker Akor Adams made his return to action for Sevilla after a 1-month and 15-day layoff due to injury, but his team’s four-game unbeaten streak came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Athletic Club at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on Sunday.

Akor Adams had last played for Sevilla on February 1, making his debut in a 0-0 draw against Getafe. However, he suffered a tendon injury in training shortly after, ruling him out for several weeks.

Following his return to fitness, head coach García Pimienta brought Akor Adams into the game against Athletic Club in the 83rd minute, hoping to secure a winner with the clash goalless.

Despite Akor Adams’ introduction, it was Athletic Club who scored the winning goal, courtesy of Yeray Alvarez’s header from Alex Berenguer’s free kick, coming just seconds after Akor Adams entered the game.

The result allowed Athletic Club to solidify their position in the top four, with 52 points claimed, eight points clear of fifth-placed Villareal, who have a game in hand. Sevilla, meanwhile, sit 12th with 36 points.

Sevilla will aim to bounce back from the disappointing loss after the international break when they face Real Betis away from home, while Athletic Club will seek another victory when they host Osasuna.

With his return to fitness complete, Akor Adams will focus on permanently overcoming his injury issues to establish himself as a consistent starter for Sevilla and ultimately rediscover his form as a clinical finisher.
