The 9th edition of the Al-Farouq Aminu Good Works Basketball Camp tipped off on a bright note at the historic Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, gathering dozens of young female athletes eager to learn the game and grow on and off the court.

Former NBA player and camp founder Al-Farouq Aminu, who has consistently hosted the camp in Nigeria for nearly a decade, shared his thoughts on the journey so far.

“I’m almost on a decade, it feels crazy. For the first 5 or 6 years I was just trying to understand Nigeria and now I feel like we’re starting to understand basketball in Nigeria, which is a beautiful thing,” he said. “We continue to improve every year. I appreciate our consistency here – the coaches, the girls – they come every year engaged and ready to learn.”

Aminu, who blazed the trail as the first active Nigerian NBA player to host a basketball camp back home, encouraged other professionals to get involved in grassroots efforts.

“My advice would be you don’t have to do things on your own. You can find other players like myself and figure out ways in order to help out – and there we will give you the wings in order to do things yourself.”

He also acknowledged the challenges he faced early on and hopes to make the process smoother for others willing to give back.

The camp continues with intense training, mentoring, and community engagement, all aimed at empowering the next generation of Nigerian female basketball talent.
