Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu scored for the second Premier League game in a row, but his effort was not enough to earn victory as Crystal Palace scored late to secure a 1-1 draw against Southampton at the St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday.
Southampton came into the game desperate for a win after an abysmal run of nine consecutive league losses at home. They faced a confident Palace side that had defeated Fulham 3-0 to qualify for the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.
Motivated by their recent form, Crystal Palace took total control of the game, with Mateta’s effort hitting the goal frame just three minutes in. The visitors looked comfortable until the 18th minute when Onuachu’s header gave Southampton their first shot on target.
Two minutes after his effort, Onuachu received a pinpoint cross from Mateus Fernandes before rising high to get his head to the ball, directing it beyond Dean Henderson and into the back of the net, giving Southampton a crucial lead.

Crystal Palace continued to dominate possession as they sought to level the scoreline and avoid an away loss in the Premier League for the first time since losing to Nottingham Forest in October 2024. Their efforts paid off in the 92nd minute as Matheus Franca scored a late goal, breaking Southampton’s hearts and securing one point for the visitors.
The disappointing draw means Southampton remain at the bottom of the Premier League with 10 points, 19 points away from Wolves who are 17th with eight games to go. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace move up to 40 points but remain 12th on the table.
Southampton’s next Premier League clash is against Tottenham on Sunday and anything less than a win could see the Saints relegated this weekend, making them the earliest side in Premier League history to achieve this unwanted feat.
