Remo Stars have been crowned the champions of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) after their 4-1 victory over Ikorodu City, becoming the 21st club to claim the top-flight title and the first team from the Southwest to lift the trophy in 25 years.

Remo Stars had secured the title by defeating Niger Tornadoes 1-0 at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne with three games remaining. As such, while Ikorodu City needed victory to keep their continental hopes alive, the Southwest derby served as a coronation ceremony to celebrate the Sky Blue Stars’ historic triumph.

Ikorodu City looked like spoiling the party when Tosin Oyedokun opened the scoring in the 15th minute, handing the Oga Boys an early lead. However, Remo Stars responded in style, turning the game around with goals from Sikiru Alimi and Ibrahim Shuaibu.

Backed by their passionate supporters, Remo Stars extended their advantage in the second half as Bello Babatunde Martins found the net in the 48th minute to make it 3-1, before Olamilekan Adebayo added a fourth in the 67th minute to cap off a memorable win.

The win marked Remo Stars’ 17th home victory of the season and extended their unbeaten streak at Ikenne to 19 games. Meanwhile, Ikorodu City remain in fourth place with 56 points and now face the likelihood of needing to win the President Federation Cup to qualify for continental football.

Remo Stars will wrap up their season with a clash against 12th-placed Bayelsa United on Sunday, May 25, while Ikorodu City are set to take on Abia Warriors in their final fixture.
