Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu is on the verge of sealing a permanent move to Turkish Süper Lig outfit Trabzonspor from Southampton, marking a return to the club where he impressed during a standout loan spell in the 2023–24 campaign.

Football journalist Buchi Laba reports that Onuachu nearly joined Trabzonspor permanently last summer, but was persuaded to stay at Southampton by then-head coach Russell Martin, as the club prepared for life back in the Premier League.

However, Martin’s tenure in the Premier League was short-lived, as he was dismissed following a poor start to the season and replaced by Croatian tactician Ivan Juric, who has since taken charge at Atalanta. Despite the managerial instability, Onuachu managed to net four goals and provide an assist under Juric before his own departure in April.

Onuachu enjoyed a prolific loan spell with Trabzonspor, scoring 17 goals and supplying four assists in 25 appearances across all competitions. His contributions were instrumental in guiding the team to a third-place finish in the league and a runners-up spot in the Turkish Cup, where they were narrowly beaten by Beşiktaş.

Impressed by his impact during that season, Trabzonspor’s hierarchy have been keen to bring Onuachu back on a permanent deal, and negotiations are now at an advanced stage with a deal close to completion ahead of the new campaign.

Despite attracting interest from clubs in Belgium and England, Onuachu has opted to rejoin Trabzonspor, drawn by the strong bond he developed with the club’s supporters.

His anticipated return is seen as a major boost and could prove pivotal in the team’s quest to re-establish themselves as Turkish champions, having not won the league title since the 2021-22 season.
