Nigerian wrestlers win four gold medals, silver at Africa Wrestling Championships

Nigerian female wrestlers once again dominated the mat on Day 1 of the ongoing Senior Africa Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt winning four gold medals and a silver.

Olympic silver medalist, Blessing Oborududu after her impressive gold medal-winning performance at the 13th African Games in Ghana stepped up once again to win gold in Egypt beating Egypt’s Osman Badran 12-2 by a superior decision to win her 14th African crown in the 68kg freestyle category.

Oborududu’s long-term teammate Odunayo Adekuoroye claimed her 9th gold medal at the Africa Championship in the 57kg freestyle category beating Egypt’s Chaimaa Aouissi by pinfall. In the 53kg category, Christianah Ogunsanya made light work of Tunisia’s Chahrazed Ayachi by superiority 10-0.

Esther Kolawole claimed her second Senior Africa Wrestling Championships title with a 11-0 win over Egypt’s Farah Hussein while in the 76kg category, Hannah Reuben lost 12-2 to Egypt’s Zainab Sghair, to settle for a silver medal. 

Hostilities continue on Tuesday as other Nigerian Wrestlers such as African Games gold medalist Mercy Genesis and debutant Ashton Adeyemi Mutuwa take to the mat in preparation for another gold rush
