Flying Eagles build momentum for AFCON opener

Highly-rated Nigerian talent Kparobo Ariehi found the back of the net as the Flying Eagles edged out Egypt’s Young Pharaohs with a hard-fought 2-1 win in a friendly match held in Cairo on Tuesday.

The friendly encounter was part of preparations for the upcoming CAF U-20 African Cup of Nations, where host nation Egypt will aim to clinch the title on home soil, while seven-time champions Nigeria hope to reclaim the trophy for the first time since their 2015 triumph.

Kparobo Ariehi netted the opening goal of the match to hand the Eagles an advantage, followed by a successful penalty from Precious Benjamin that sealed the win for Nigeria.

Egypt’s first match in the upcoming 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled against Zambia on Sunday, April 27 at 21:00 local time at the Cairo International Stadium.

On the other hand, Nigeria will commence their campaign on Thursday, May 1 facing Tunisia at 15:00 local time at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.

Nigeria will hope that their friendly victory over Egypt will boost their confidence going into the tournament, as they aim to finish among the top four semifinalists and secure a spot to represent Africa at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile before fighting for the trophy.
