…Ikorodu City to get $50,000 for CAF Cups

The management of Ikorodu City FC has expressed confidence in the club’s financial capacity to compete on the continental stage, should they qualify for next season’s CAF Champions League or CAF Confederation Cup.

In their debut season in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Ikorodu City have exceeded all expectations, currently sitting third on the league table with just four matches remaining.

Despite a rocky start to the campaign, the “Oga Boys” have turned their fortunes around, recording 15 wins, eight draws, and 11 losses. They are now joint-third with Abia Warriors, with both clubs on 53 points, though Ikorodu holds a superior goal difference.

As a relatively new club in Nigerian football, some fans have raised concerns about the team’s financial strength to handle the rigors of continental competition in the event they secure a CAF slot in their maiden top-flight season.

However, club director Tobi Adepoju has assured fans that Ikorodu City is financially prepared for the challenge.

“I laugh when I see this question,” Adepoju responded on microblogging site X. “But we are not focusing on that for now. Our priority is to secure our NPFL status. Once that is confirmed, we’ll look at other possibilities. For now, we’re still fighting for points.”

He went on to highlight the club’s strong financial standing.

“This is a club with a budget of over ₦300 million this season, and that’s excluding the funding of our Academy, which plays in the third division,” he said.

“With two sponsors backing the first team, and four additional sponsors and partners supporting the Academy, we are more than capable of prosecuting continental games without financial stress.

“Our chairman’s financial commitment is top-notch and unprecedented. As of today, we owe no salaries, bonuses, or allowances to players, coaches, or backroom staff.”

Should Ikorodu City qualify for either the CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup, they would also receive a guaranteed $50,000 grant from CAF to support teams during the preliminary rounds.
