Hamburger SV sporting director Claus Costa and board member Stefan Kuntz have expressed their delight following the acquisition of Super Eagles defender Jordan Torunarigha, who arrives at the club on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old centre-back joins the newly promoted Bundesliga side from Belgian Pro League outfit Gent, where he spent four seasons. During his time in Belgium, Torunarigha made 145 appearances across all competitions and clinched the Belgian Cup in his debut campaign.

Speaking on the defender’s arrival, the club’s sporting director Claus Costa highlighted Torunarigha’s development into a key player at Gent and expressed optimism about his future at Hamburger.

“Jordan has become an absolute fixture and top performer in Gent,” said Costa. “We have always observed his sporting and personal development abroad and are delighted that he now wants to take the next steps in his development together with HSV.”

Hamburger board member Stefan Kuntz, who previously worked with Torunarigha in the German U21 and Olympic national teams, praised the player’s professionalism and outlined the qualities that make him a good fit for the club’s playing philosophy.

“Jordan is a clear, professional, and mature character,” said Kuntz. “He has developed significantly in recent years and combines very good pace with strong heading and tackling ability. With this defensive balance and his ability to make a difference in build-up play, Jordan is an ideal fit for our requirements.”

Torunarigha, who began his senior career in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin, shared his enthusiasm about returning to the German top flight and emphasised his determination to contribute to HSV’s success.

“I know the Bundesliga and am very happy to be returning and playing in this special league again – especially with a club steeped in tradition like HSV,” he said.

“The management made a great effort for me and gave me a great feeling. I can hardly wait to get to know my teammates, the coaching staff, the staff, the fans, and the city, and to use all my strengths and experience to help us have a successful season together and achieve our goals,” he added.
