Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has hinted that forward Ademola Lookman could wear the captain’s armband before the season ends.

Lookman was on target as Atalanta thrashed Juventus 4-0 in Turin, a result that moved them within three points of league leaders Inter Milan and two points behind second-placed Napoli. With just 10 games remaining, La Dea is firmly in the title race as they chase their first-ever Scudetto, building on last season’s historic UEFA Europa League triumph.

Lookman’s goal against Juventus was his 13th in Serie A this season and his 18th across all competitions. It also marked his 50th goal for Atalanta in 109 appearances since joining from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the 2021/22 season.

After the final whistle, Gasperini shared a warm embrace with Lookman, signaling that their recent spat following Atalanta’s UEFA Champions League exit is now behind them. The veteran Italian coach praised Lookman’s growth and influence on the team, hinting at a possible captaincy role for the Nigerian.

“I am convinced he (Lookman) can be the captain before the end of the season,” Gasperini said after the game.

“Lookman became a fantastic player when he improved his perception of the team. He used to have a more individual approach—not because he was selfish, but because he focused on his own game. Now, he has made Atalanta great, and Atalanta has made him great.”

Despite his growing importance at the club, Lookman is widely expected to leave Atalanta this summer, with several top European clubs reportedly interested in signing him. The Nigerian international has been linked with moves to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United as the transfer window approaches.
