Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will be looking to kick off their CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group B campaign on a high note as they face the Carthage Eaglets of Tunisia today at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo.

Despite holding a superior head-to-head record against Tunisia, including a resounding 4-0 victory in the third-place playoff two years ago—also in Egypt—the Tunisians will be eager to avenge that heavy defeat.

Interestingly, Tunisia was not originally slated to participate in this year’s tournament but secured a repechage spot following the disqualification of Ivory Coast, who withdrew as hosts.

The North Africans boast a talented squad, with several players playing for top European clubs, including Zayon Chtaï-Telamio (Paris Saint-Germain), Anis Doubal (Olympique de Marseille), Farès Bousnina (OGC Nice), and Wassim El Abrougui (Olympique Lyonnais). With such a pedigree, Tunisia will aim to make a strong impression from the outset.

Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu, has made it clear that the team’s primary objective is to reach the semi-finals and secure one of the four available tickets to the FIFA U-20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Chile from September 27 to October 19, 2025.

“Our goal is to get the ticket to the World Cup. Once that is secured, we can then shift focus to winning the tournament. But for now, the priority is to reach the semi-finals,” Zubairu said.
